Anti-Torture Protestors Greet Yoo Book Tour Feb. 11, 2010

SAN MATEO, Calif. (KCBS) — Former Bush Administration lawyer and U.C. Berkeley Professor John Yoo was met with protestors at a speaking engagement in San Mateo Thursday, as he promoted his new book.
Listen KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports Yoo spoke to the San Mateo Rotary Club, saying Al-Qaeda started a war with the United States on September 11th, 2001.

“Because of the unconventional way that they fight against us, the best means for us to stop them from carrying out more attacks on the United States is through interrogation,” said Yoo.

He says that what constitutes torture is a tough line to draw.

“I don’t think that the policies that the Bush Administration approved crossed the line,” said Yoo. “There always could be cases where people went too far, or violated their authority.”

However, Yoo says the U.S. has the right to use force in its own self defense.

Yoo was met by a handful of protestors.

“We would like to see John Yoo fired from his job at U.C. Berkeley, and indicted and prosecuted for his role in torture,” said protestor Cynthia Papermaster.

Yoo has just written a book called “Crisis in Command,” which is a history of presidential power.
